How Can You Prepare this Autumn for Winter?

BLC Blog

Autumn. One of the most enjoyable seasons across the Northeast. Apple picking, carving pumpkins, baking pies, and taking in the vibrant foliage — what’s not to love?

There is plenty to enjoy with family and friends before winter rolls in. Keep in mind, though, that strong winds, freezing temperatures, and heavy snowfall may be here sooner than you think. Is your home prepared for the weather? There are key tasks you can do to winterize and protect your home and property from wind damage, a winter storm, frozen pipes, and a potential fire.

What exactly does winterizing involve? For example, while the weather is still bearable, clean your gutters for proper excess water flow, examine your roof for any damaged or loose shingles, and replace your furnace filter if necessary.

Preparing your home for the winter months not only keeps out the cold, but also helps protect your home from possible frozen and burst pipes, roof failure and collapse from heavy snow, and even a possible fire from a sudden heating system failure.

Speaking of which, did you know that fires occur most often during the winter months? If you are planning on using space heaters in your home, make sure to place them on a flat surface and to never leave them unattended. Also, to help avoid overheating, plug them directly into a wall outlet instead of using an extension cord or power outlet. It is also advised to not place another electrical device in that same outlet.

A recap to help you get started:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts
  • Insulate pipes and disconnect hoses from outside faucets
  • Examine doors and windows for gaps where warm air can escape
  • Test your fire alarms
  • Replace your furnace filter (if necessary)
  • Test your heating system, so that you know it is working properly
  • If you are using a space heater, plug it directly into the wall and not by way of an extension cord or power strip, and do not plug any other electrical devices into that outlet
